How to get the Perfect Bong Rip
The perfect bong rip can be an elusive thing when you’re just starting out or when you haven’t quite got the hang of your bong. We’ve spent a lot of time testing and researching bongs and their application. And over the years, we’ve gathered some awesome insights and resources. And we believe that these insights shouldn’t be kept to ourselves. So, in the interest of the cannabis community, we want to share the best of this information with you. Getting the ideal bong rip is tricky sometimes, but we’ll help you with the different parts that make it happen.
You have to be familiar with a few things before we get into executing that ideal bong rip. Since we’ve been testing a whole range of rigs and pipes here, we’ve narrowed down the things that matter most in your bong hits. And water testing different rigs and pieces has revealed some useful information that will help all of us get more out of our bongs. Some of these aspects include the water type, level of water, and temperature of the water too. Let’s start with the water type first.
The best way to get the most use out of your bong hits is to use distilled water. Remember that it’s not the lone factor that goes into your bong rip. You’ll need to find the right balance of temperature to get it right. Also, if your bong has a percolator, that also comes into play. So, you’ll have two options depending on what kind of pipe or bong you’re using. Either way, distilled water is still the way to go for both options. Distilled water is just regular water that has gone through vaporization and then condensed back to liquid. This means the impurities and minerals get removed in the process. So, you don’t have to worry too much about debris and particles getting caught in your bong. Also, distilled water does not become as cloudy as regular water when the temperature changes. This means you can normally still see clearly through your bong.
Bong rip with an ice catch
Some bongs come with an ice catch as part of the apparatus. The main thing here is to know how much ice to use. Most users make the mistake of putting in too much ice. We’ve found that a few pieces of ice are more than enough to create that awesome bong rip. Start by filling the ice catch water pipe with the distilled water you prepared. Make sure that the water is enough to cover the downstem up to an inch or so. It’s best to use water that is at 65 – 75° F (room temperature). Too hot and it ruins the hit; too cold and it will numb the taste of your rip.
As you take a hit/drag from your bong, the water will percolate if it’s at the right temperature (without cooling it excessively). This is a good sign. You want the hit to come closer to normal room temperatures without pushing off to excessive levels. If it’s too cold, it can create that harsh drag during the hit, which is not good for your throat. The percolated warm smoke can cool down to a nice neutral temperature when it passes through the ice. At this neutral level, you get a smooth and rich rip that perfectly hits the right spot. If you don’t get access to a perc or ice catch, you can go for one of the many varieties of Chillers available these days.
Bong rip with a Perc
If your bong comes with a perc, you have multiple chambers to get that best rip. You can put cold water in the bottom chamber and put a little warm water in the upper chamber. The combination of these two chambers should give you a more balanced hit when you take a rip. The difference in the water temperatures can create a balance that is not too dry or harsh for your throat. The cool water can bring down the temperature of the smoke. But when it goes through the top chamber, it gets fused with the warm water. Here, the perc adds some humidity back to the smoke giving it a more neutral tone and temperature. The main idea here is to find the right balance between water levels and temperature. This way, you’ll be able to create hit after hit of bong rips that are perfectly balanced and smooth.
